Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or change forms and conventions of real media products?
We planned to make sure that, the film that we produce would have to be the same as most thriller films in the film industry. This would then guide us to bring the features of a thriller. This would also make the connection to our audience good and easy. It would make then understand the method in which we have used and why we use it.David Flincher’s se7en was a huge inspiration to us, we have use similar techniques used in se7en to make our film. Se7en was a huge success as the audience understood the purpose of the film and the techniques used in the film. This makes it all easy for the audience to connect with the film. Using these conventions made our films look professional and easy to understand also made it look recognisable.
The lighting and other factors that we controlled made the film seem like an original and traditional thriller film. This would also make it easy to understand and easy to know what the film is about. This would give the audience a clear understanding before the characters speak. The dialogue used in the film is used in some of the most successful thriller films. This helped us create a connection with our films and other great thriller films. Being able to alter these factors helped us control the outcome of our film.
How does your media product present particular social groups?
The social group we decided to communicate to our thriller are the normal stereotypical group. This is one such as men being the heroes in films and being portrayed as strong, intelligent and brave. These are the typical roles that a male would play in a stereotype society. This is what we have decided to go with. This is what the public are used and have had growing up watching films. Although some females in other thriller films are portrayed as that, we decided to go with a male that would lead in our film.
To match the type of hero we have decided to go with. We made the villain a male as well. This would represent man in different ways. This would show the positives and negative also the weaknesses and strength of man. This is what also helped us attract female audience. Having a male figure in our film. The features that our male villain will portray are strength, but he is also a methodical character, this is the same as John Doe in David Finches se7en.
To make sure that we follow the props character theory, we decided to have two heroes and a villain in our film. This would not only how this theory. However, it would show the strengths our villain has. We chose to subvert the typical social stereotypes of a thriller so we used binary composition. This would not only capture the target audience that we set our eyes on but, it would prove to show good understanding to others audiences.
Our characters are good examples of presenting different social groups. This is because on of out our detectives is older than the other. This would show different levels of intelligence within the two detectives. This is good as different ideas amongst the detective’s.one of our detectives was 25-30 and the other being much older. This is the traditional detective’s partnerships in films. We did this to show that we are aware of what attracts different audiences. We wanted to have the mix of the two detectives with one being around the job for a long time showing he has great maturity and wisdom on what kind of job he does. This will attract the much older audience as they would have lived for long and would have the same features as our older detective. The other detective being  young. This shows the immaturity in society. This would represent the younger generation our thriller would appeal to.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
We have different types of media institutions that would distribute our film. We can also use these institutions as an advertising film to attract the attentions of big film firms. This can only be done when we achieve enough recognition the media world. We can start of by using cheap and free media institutions to distribute our film. This would get us the recognition that we deserves. We can use YouTube and 1channel.com. This would be one of the best methods that we could use to make sure that our film gets enough feedback and also recognition.
We can also distribute our film in another way. We can use face book and other social networks to distribute our film. This wouldn't be free and also getting feedback n it wouldn't be hard. Using the internet is the best method as we would be able to hit a wider target audience. This is what we would want to achieve in order for our film to progress in responds and rating. This would then lead to other media institutions wanting to distribute our film as a form of marketing. This would be useful to use as our film would be travelling around.
The moment all of this is completed and we have enough reputation in the media world; we would hopefully have been able to gain enough money to make sure that we distribute our film to the larger and popular production companies. The rating and feedback would help us, as they would be positive. This would make big production companies like “new line cinema” to invest in our film and distribute it. This would be good for us, new line cinema produced se7en. This would be a great achievement as we try to implement most of the techniques used in the film se7en to make our film much more thrilling. This would give our film another level of comparison as it would be on the same production line as se7en.
After this stage we would only begin to get more recognition for our film. Once a big production firm decides to distribute our film. Their past success and company image would only want to make more people want to see and get our film. This would only increase the interest from other distributing firms as they would also want to make money. This would help us reach a lot of people in terms of target audiences.  For example, the cinema, blockbuster, Tesco, love film etc. These businesses would want to get our film to also increase their personal status; this in the process would help the reputation of our own film. On the other hand, this would be expensive compared to us doing it through face book and other social networks.
Who would be the audience of your media product?
The audience that we were addressing in our thriller are 15+, this is because many psychological thrillers aim at this target audience. In our plan and research we included this. This was the prime age for our thriller. The age also referrers to the kind of changes someone 15+ would be making in their live at this stage. This is why we decided this age. Marketing wise this is perfect as they would have disposable income and they would be able to watch our film. This is good as they would also have social groups. Another reason to the age group being 15+ is because we would be able to target and wider range of people. This would give us a three year advantage from making our target audience 15 rather than 18. This is also because; there is hardly any violence in our film. This would be suitable for a 15 year old to watch. There is also no death or sexual scenes. Our film is also suitable for both genders as our film as it has muscular expressions and feminine expression.
How did you attract/ address our audience?
We used different methods in our film to attract our audience. Our target audience were 15+. This is what normal thrillers aim at. To make sure we achieved this. We made sure that our main protagonist was in his twenties. This would attract females to watch our film. We did this because of the physical attraction. This method we know would work because of the success of other films using this method. The strong male figures our character had also made it easy to attract this type of audience. However, this did not just attract females but we thought it would attract teenage males. this is because they would have a male figure to look up to and may even want to copy the characteristics of our character.
The second of our protagonist is much older showing in the film that he has a better maturity In our film. With his age it gives us the chance to capture the older the group of audience that we had planned to capture. This would not only wider our target audience, it will also give them different levels of understanding the thriller as different ages understand things in a different way. This would show to us that we have been able to reach out to all the other demographics.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
When making his media product. We decides to dived the work amongst ourselves. This would make production quicker and effective as we would be able to exploit the strongest skill that we individually have.
I have also used the editing tools to polish our film and get rid of all the errors and unwanted scenes. I used different editing techniques and the effect of it to make sure that we had not mistakes i our film. This helped us make sure that our film matched the storyboard that we created. This can change the view of any film as it would make fun to watch. From this process, we were able to make sure that we make our film look professional and also look good. This does not only add extra credit to the film, but it also makes it interesting to watch. This would make our final piece look good as the film will flow in good sequence.
I used the timeline to make sure that our film was in the right order. This would make editing easy and using transitions to make the film have a professional feel when it changes scenes. This would make our film professional and make people want to see it. When editing I had to keep in mind the importance of the different camera shot and the effects of them. Using different camera angles and movements to convey meaning and narrative. This is important due to the fact that, it would allow the audience to understand what we are trying to achieve by using different camera shots. For example, using an establishing shot to show the setting, the atmosphere of what the scene is taking place. This is also important to the costumes and props. This is done to portray a stereotypical thought of the character.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
From the start of his task, i would say that i knew nothing about media and the different techniques required to make a film. I would also say that i had no idea who to make a film and how to take on the different camera effects and other effects to make the film a success. However, as i went along researching. I became familiar and comfortable with the effects and techniques. I then understood how to use them to its best. I would say that the research that i did helped me to understand the different aspect of media.
During the research i studied things like camera angles, the effects of non-diegetic and diegetic sound etc.  This helped me incorporate them into our film. Learning all of these techniques would not only show that   understand them and know how to use them, but it would also get me points when my work gets marked. These techniques are used in thriller such as se7en, so us using it in our film a made it easy for us to attract our target audience also reach out to a wider audience. This keep the audience on the edge of their seat as the film would be thrilling and interesting. This would also make our film look professional in product. This would make the film much more appealing to other production lines.
I also learnt that using different camera angles would keep the audience interested as they all would have different effects to them. This would only mean that the camera angels would bring suspense and thrill to the scene that would be shooting. This would also make the audience wonder why the camera angel would be what it is at that particular scene. This would keep the audience engaged in the film and also make them create some sort of relationship with the film. This was important as, this would be one of the best ways we got the audience to keep going and not fall asleep during the film.

This further more allows the audience to follow the narrative with greater understanding due to conformity of conventions. The scene progresses as a clear distinction in power is portrayed as our villain out wits are protagonists as he escapes leaving out Heros in bewilderment thus leaving our audience on edge wanting to find out more further more engaging the audience as this is what is expected in a thriller. This further more allows the audience to experience escapism.

Story board images

We wouldn't be drawing the images for our story boards. We would use real life images. We are going to film our film then when we are editing, we would make images out of our recording. This would make our story board look real.

Tuesday, 26 February 2013

Final ideas.
PLOT SYNOPSIS. STORY BOARD LIST.

  • Our film will start as a low angle shot in an office as the two detectives are working, discussing how they plan to bring this new suspect in to justice. We are going to use a low angle shot thus making the audience look up to the detectives thus portraying them as powerful. This also portrays the office environment to the audience and also the roles and importance of the characters. The abnormality with the opening shot being a low angle creates an uneasy feel for the audience as this is not expected but creates disorientation that conforms to the conventions of thriller. We all also be subverting general expectations as we will not begin with an establishing shot therefore the surroundings will not be shown therefore making the audience feel enclosed and trapped within the office environment. This further more creates a tense atmosphere for the audience thus making them feel unneasy and also filling them with suspense.

  • The scene continues with a long shot of the room, this further more allows the audience to feel engaged with the narrative as at first there vision is contrained creating tension and disorientation and therefore conforming to the conventions of a thriller. As the audiences vison will be opened up, this will allow them to embrace the scene and setting thus taking in the office atmosphere and the props within the scene. This further allows the audience to feel engaged as a clear grasp of the narrative. The long shot also allows the audience to view the characters from head to toe therefore allowing the mise en scene for example there dress to be shown thus making connotations about there charcter.

  • A two-shot follows as the two detectives are in coversation. The scene continues with a close up in the office as a telephone rings. this gives the the object more significance and further more draws the audeince closer in to engagage them withing the narrative. The phone ringing also offers a sinister feel to the film as we are taking everyday objects and utilised.

  • A mid shot of one detective as he picks up the phone and is in conversation. A close up folllows to indicate to the audience the detectives emotion as he is shocked from the news he hears.

  • A two shot follows the phone scene as the two detectives converse. This follows general conventions as this is what is expected in thrillers. The two detectives continue to converse as we will feature a shot reverse shot to portray this to the audience. This will enbale the audience to feel engaged in the narrative as they will be made to feel as if they are involved withing the conversation.
  • A high angle shot follows as the detectives are informed the suspect is held in an interview room as he hands himself in. Point of view shots will then follow as both detectives make their way to the interview room. we will use hand held camera movemnts for this to portray a nervous ideology about the narrative.
  • The Point of view shot will last for a few seconds as the detectives make their way. A side ways panning shot will portray the detectives preparing for the encounter with the villain.
  • A cut to a close up of the door handle follows and we will transit with a fast cut to a mid shot of the villain behind a desk in the interview room and then transit to a long shot portraying the detectives walking in and also the villain. This allows the audience to gain a clear grasp of the narrative and characters as our props will portray ideologies about our characters thus conforming to props character theory in a sense that the audience will recognise who role what character play.
  • Two shots and over shoulder shots will follow as the detectives question the villain about his crimes. The shots will repaeat after each other to portray changes in facial expressions thus including the audience within the narrative, allowing the audeience to feel engaged.
  • The scene progresses as a sudden cut during silience in dialogue as the detctives wait for an answer from the villain. The shot will transit suddenly to a close up of a clock ticking. This is when we will utilise an emphasis of non diegetic sound as the abnormality of the loudness of the clock will only be heard by the audience. This is done to create suspense and to also portray time. This keeps the audience of edge and further more creates tension thus conforming to the conventions of a thriller.
  • A close us follows of the villain as he smiles after the suspense filled wait. a close up of his hand follows as he clicks his fingers and the lights turn off and on. as the lights come back on the villain is gone. A Long shot follows as the detectives are left in bewilderment as to the abnormality of the villains mysteriouse strenghts. This add to the mystery, tension and suspense conforming once again to the conventions of a thriller.
  • A tracking shot follows as the detectives run out of the room in chase. At which point we will feature a point of view shot as the detectives see the villain at the stairs. a shot reverse shot occurs and then a point of view shot follows as the audience will be viewing the villain through the detectives eyes once more viewing the villain smerking as he clicks his fingers one last time at which point the lights will black out and the credits will appear.

Health and Safety / Risk Assessment

We would need to identify the hazards on our location to help us avoid them. We would do this every time we film. This will apply at different locations. Especially outside of school. We would have to make sure that the wires are not in the way of actors. We also have to use the props and equipment safely as the can be broken. The props not in use has to be out of sight when filming, this will prevent anyone from tripping or the props getting damaged. We also have to make sure that we use the tripod properly as we could drop the camera and also damage it.

Sound, music, dialogue

We plan on making our own sound in our film. We will be creating non diegetic sound. We will do this with the ticking of the clock and also the footsteps of the characters. This will be in sequences as we will need it to create a rhythm and also a pattern, also like a chain of events. The movement of items on our film would also help create non diegetic sound. The dialogue would also help as the character would speak in tense moments. This will create a pattern of speech and action, creating a rhythm in our film.

Location

We have got all of the locations for our film. We will be doing it in an office and also in the corridors of our school. The corridor is where we will shot scenes where the character would be walking. The office is where the detective would be interviewing the suspect. We would have the lights and mood of the altered to give the effects that we would want to have for that scene. We also picked the office because of the phone. The phone is going to be a key part in our film. Having the phone next to the office is perfect because it matches what we are trying achieve.

Friday, 8 February 2013

Target audience and narrative;

In our group we will be creating an opening two minuets to a thriller film for a target audience of 16-25 as 75% of a survey shows that teenagers watch thrillers. Our thriller will not be a psychological thriller that will contain violence therefore the certificate will be a 12 as violence will not be shown.

In our group we have decided we will be following Todorov’s theory of narative as our film will start off as an equilibrium. Two detectives that play antagonistic roles will be carrying on with their daily lifestyles, this represents normality and therefore makes the narrative much easier to understand and follow for the audience. The two detectives will be dressed in smart office attire to portray them as "heroes" thus allowing there character roles to instantly be recognisable to the target audience.

The film continues as everything is normal (equilibrium) until the detectives receive a phone call about an unusual mysterious terrorist organisation, the Illuminati. This throws a problem (disequilibrium) that our antagonists must overcome and portrays a battle to the audience as the antagonists and protagonists have been introduced.

The phone call notifies the detectives that the terrorist has handed himself in and is locked in an interview room. This subverts conventions as this is not what is expected as a chase seem will conform to the conventions of a thriller however, as the interview progresses, the villain becomes uncomfortable. we will make an uneasy and tense atmosphere using diegetic sounds much as a clock ticking. this will allow the audience to feel tension and uncertainty and this conforms to the conventions of a thriller. As the villain becomes more uneasy due to the questions he is asked he suddenly halts as he clicks his fingers, the power is cut off and he escapes. A chase seen (journey) featuring panning shots and point of view shots will portray the chase at a fast pace thus engaging the audience and driving narrative creating thrill. The film ends as it seems the villain escapes however he walks into a trap and is captured. This further more creates thrill as the audience believe the villain has escaped however he does not and we end on a disequilibrium.
Conventions of a thriller

The conventions of a thrill include tense music. This is done to create an uneasy and tense atmosphere for the audience thus leaving the audience in suspense, wanting to know more.

A vast amount of camera angles allows the audience to see from different perspectives allowing the audience to gain a clear perception of all characters and also the narrative.

Fast cuts are also common in thrillers as this adds to the fast tempo creating thrill and uncertainty for the audience. it further more engages the audience into the narrative and alludes to the use of the gratifications theory as the audience are left needing to know what happens next.

Hostile locations also conform to the conventions of a thriller as this entails the persona of the villain and allows the audience to gain there own perception of the characters due to the surroundings. This further more allows us to portray are characters much easily as our protagonists will be presented in an office environment where as our antagonist will be presented in a hostile environment. Mystery towards certain characters are also common as this leaves the audience asking questions wanting to know more about the character. We will create a sense of mystery towards our villain as this is most common.

Small condensed claustrophobic environments are also common as this creates uncertainty and disorientation, this further more makes the audience on edge leaving them wanting to watch more as they will be engaged into the narrative.

Character roles such as a "damsel in distress", "hero" and "villain" are also used often however we will subvert conventions as to not use a "damsel in distress" as this seems too common and portrays the narrative as predictable whereas we aim to keep our audience on edge thus conforming to the conventions in this aspect.

The third hour:location

location
We will be filming under the bridge of the a3
we are planning to use the schools drama studios for our interview scene
the upper floor of the sixth form may be used for the get away scene
the subway can be used to create suspence and uncertainty therefore comforming to the general conventions of a thriller
sixth form offices can be used to start our film for the disequilibrium
Props character theory

Se7en follows normal conventions of a detective thriller such as having two detectives searching for a powerful villain; they search for clues and deploy traps in order to find him. The film also follows props character theory i.e.:

  1. Mills: being the hero
  2. Summerset: being the helper
  3. John Doe: obviously being the villain

These are atypical hero/helper/villain because although the detective Mills is the hero he isn’t what you would expect from your hero due to his character, (although he may be ideal; young and essentially a good man he is mostly naïve - he lets things get to him. He is also sensitive, easily influenced (mostly by Summerset) and impatient-a typical character of this genre). Summerset is also atypical due to his age and being the more experienced out of the two (the hero is usually the more experienced character). He is also influenced by his partner Mills, making him methodical and bitter. However Summerset is married to the job (as most detectives where in that time). Lastly John Doe is an atypical villain, because he is a religious extremist who always knows his next step and that of his opponents - He wins at the end, but by winning this also results in his death.
Toderovs theory of narrativeToderovs narritive theory is conveyed within the thriller film se7en. Se7en connotes to the typical conventions of a thiller as it starts of with a equilibrirum. As detective Summerset is living out his daily routine, hes then given the task of training detective Mills passing on his skills, this equilibrium is then disturbed when the murders commence, this is recognised by the two detectives. In an attemp to repair this disrupion detective Mills and Summerset take it upon themselves to find out who is this mass murderer and to bring him to justice. Once Jon Doe hands himself in, in order to complete his plan the new equilibrium comes into play, once Jon and detectives Mills's wife is dead as life goes on creating new routines for both detectives.

this is a good example of how different methods are used to make the objective of this sort film successful

Is 15 really stronger than 12A?

Yes. 15 works are stronger than 12 or 12A rated works and could include any of the following:

  • strong violence
  • frequent strong language (eg 'f***').
  • portrayals of sexual activity
  • strong verbal references to sex
  • sexual nudity
  • brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
  • discriminatory language or behaviour
  • drug taking

How much strong language is there in a 15?

There could potentially be a great deal. At 15 there is no upper limit on the number of uses of strong language (eg f***).
Occasionally there may be uses of the strongest terms (eg 'c***'), although continued or aggressive use will not normally be passed 15.

What about discriminatory or offensive terms?

There may be racist, homophobic or other discriminatory language, and the work could explore themes relating to this.
However, at 15 the work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.

How much sex and nudity is allowed at 15?

At 15 sexual activity can be portrayed, as long as there is no strong or graphic detail. Some sex scenes can be quite long at this category and may involve some nudity and movement. Though nudity may be allowed in a sexual context there should be no strong detail.
There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.
There can be strong references to sex and sexual behaviour, but especially strong or crude references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context.
Heterosexual and homosexual sex and sex references are treated the same.

Can there be strong violence?

Yes, at 15 violence may be strong. It should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury, however, and the strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable.
Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable.
Easily accessible weapons may not be glamorised.

What about sexual violence?

There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence (for example descriptions of rape or sexual assault in a courtroom scene or in victim testimony) but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.

What about horror works?

Many horror films are rated 15. At 15 there can be strong threat and menace (as long as it is not sadistic or sexualised), although the strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable.

Can you see drugs in a 15 rated film or video?

At 15 drug taking may be shown but the work as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse.
The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances like aerosols or solvents is unlikely to be acceptable at 15.

What about dangerous behaviour or things teens might copy?

We consider the risk of potential harm to impressionable teenagers. For example, dangerous behaviour such as hanging, suicide and self-harming should not dwell on detail which could be copied.' - Source: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/15

Our opening two minute sequence will be aimed at people over 15 as it is suitable for them. Our Target Audience is teenagers and young adults as they have a good knowledge and awareness of the gang culture in London. This may well appeal to middle aged people as well as they can develop a better understanding of gang culture in the modern society.
This is the corridor we will use. We will use lights to make the place look much more like a thriller scene

This is the detective table we will use

This is a mid shot that will take place in our film

Another camera shot of the phone we will be using in our thriller convention

We have taken shots of the room we will be filming in. We have taken the pictures from the camera angel

Se7en subverts thriller in different ways. The setting of the movie seems similar in most scenes. It rains in most of the scenes. It is also dark and in the scenes. This is putting across sadness and portrays darkness of the events that happen in the film. The use of blood is exposing to the audience the evilness of the plot. The blood makes the audience feel sorry and also feel emotional for what is happening in the story. Se7en conforms to the life style of normal cops in America. This is typical as the cops are married to their job. This is caused when their wife is killed or dead.

The camera angels of the films makes the audience wonder what is going to happen next as it never shows what the character is looking at. This bring effect when something happens to the character, this makes the audience jump and also afraid. This is completing the objective of the movie transforming into a thriller. The film has a slow build up to the murders and when the murders are revelled. It scares the audience. The signs shown before and after the killing make the audience wonder what is coming up next. This keeps the audience on the edge of their seat. This does not only make it exciting but also scary as nobody knows what is going to happen next.

Somerset is used to all of this because, He sleeps on this own in his house. He is constantly thinking and also on the move. At times he can’t sleep because of what he is thinking, what is going on. This makes him aware of the things going on around him. He is also patient and calm, this is typical in thrillers, as the character has to have such characterises to fit the purpose of them. This makes it easy for the audience to understand to film as the character has some sort of correlation with the film.

The theme song matches in with the mood of the film. The mood is dark which matches in with the type of songs that were played. The song seems to get higher in pitch and tone as it get closer to a crime scene or when someone is about to die. This makes the audience wonder again and also start to think of what is going to happen. This makes the movie scary and also adds some sort of atmosphere to the film. It also brings suspense to the crime scene and makes it difficult for anyone to predict what is going to happen next.

Lighting

We will use back lighting and low key lighting to create thrill and uncertainty, this conforms to the conventions of a thriller.

We will use low key lighting indoors and natural lighting to connote equilibrium. The low key lighting will be used for the disequilibrium.

Micro-elements of sound will also be used.

Sound

We will use background sounds as clock ticks in interview scene to reflect time and to help drive narrative

Dialogue will be used throughout as this is the main source to drive narrative.

Diegetic and non-diegetic sounds will be used.

Location

We will be filming under the bridge on A3.

School film studio and drama studios are possible for the interview main scene.

Sixth form upper floor can be used to get away scene.

Subway can be used to create suspense and uncertainty. This will conform to the conventions of a thriller.

Sixth form offices/ staff rooms can be used at start of film for the disequilibrium.

Propps character theory

There will be a hero, villain, blockers but no damsel in distress, we will use a role reversal as the detectives will need saving and they are men.
